Brief information about Zurabi Bobua
Zurabi Bobua was working as one of Deputy Deans of the Faculty of Law at KemSU. Aside from his main duties, he was also working in the selection committee as well. This is why he was addressed by his colleague Juriy Levich, who also worked as a Deputy Dean of the same Faculty. He suggested to help a businessmen, who happened to be one of the entrants’ father to make sure that his daughter will be accepted. He knew that Bobua takes part in the selection committee and this is the main reason why he asked him for help.
Zurabi agreed, even though he knew that the decision is being made collectively and he will not be able to have a say in the matter on his own. For his “services” he asked a payment of $2000 and Juriy Levich received $500 as their middle-man. After the exams, the girl was accepted to the full-time faculty on the basis of contractual obligations.
But the scheme was uncovered and during the trial it turned out that Zurabi Bobua did not have the authority to influence the committee. This is why the case was requalified from taking a bribe into fraud. Juriy Levich and the student’s father were sentenced for 2 years on probation each and Bobua was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months of probation. But because the statute of limitations has expired, he did not carry out his sentence.
